Here are some age-appropriate chores for 6-year-olds:

  1. Making Their Bed: Teach them how to straighten their sheets and fluff their pillows.
  2. Tidying Their Room: Encourage them to pick up toys, books, and clothes from the floor and put them away.
  3. Setting the Table: Show them how to set out plates, utensils, and napkins for meals.
  4. Clearing the Table: After meals, have them help clear dishes and utensils from the table.
  5. Putting Away Dishes: Ask them to help put away clean dishes from the dishwasher or drying rack.
  6. Feeding Pets: If you have pets, they can assist with feeding and providing fresh water.
  7. Dusting Low Surfaces: Give them a duster or cloth to dust low surfaces like tables and shelves.
  8. Watering Indoor Plants: Teach them how to water indoor plants with a small watering can.
  9. Matching Socks: Have them help match and fold socks after laundry.
  10. Assisting with Laundry: They can put dirty clothes in the hamper and help load the washing machine or dryer.
  11. Simple Meal Prep: Involve them in basic meal prep tasks like washing vegetables or stirring ingredients (with supervision).
  12. Packing Their School Bag: Teach them to pack their backpack with school supplies and homework.
  13. Putting Away Groceries: When you return from grocery shopping, let them help put away non-breakable items in the pantry or refrigerator.
  14. Watering Outdoor Plants: Under supervision, they can use a small watering can to water outdoor plants.
  15. Matching Shoes: Encourage them to match and put away their shoes neatly.
  16. Wiping Down Surfaces: Provide a damp cloth and have them wipe down surfaces like countertops and tables.
  17. Folding Washcloths and Hand Towels: Show them how to fold washcloths and hand towels neatly.
  18. Brushing Teeth and Hair: Ensure they brush their teeth and hair independently.
  19. Putting Away Toys Before Bed: As part of their bedtime routine, they can put away toys.
  20. Emptying Small Trash Bins: Have them empty small trash cans into the main trash bin.

It’s important to supervise and guide them when they start doing these chores to ensure safety and proper completion. As they become more proficient, you can gradually increase their responsibilities and introduce new tasks. Praise and positive reinforcement can help motivate them to take pride in their contributions to the household.
