How To Clean A Microwave

February 19, 2024 by Sarah

Cleaning a microwave is a simple task that can be done using common household items. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you clean your microwave effectively:

Step 1: Gather your supplies

  • Water
  • Vinegar
  • Microwave safe bowl
  • Oven mitts/towel
  • Sponge/microfibre cloth/paper towel
  • Warm soapy water
  • Multi-surface cleaner/mild detergent
  • Baking soda/slice of lemon (optional)

Step 2: Prepare the cleaning solution

  • Mix equal parts of water and white vinegar in a microwave-safe bowl or measuring cup. Alternatively, you can use a commercial microwave cleaner.

Step 3: Place the solution in the microwave

  • Put the bowl or measuring cup with the water-vinegar mixture inside the microwave.

Step 4: Microwave for several minutes

  • Turn on the microwave and heat the solution for 3-5 minutes, or until it starts to boil. The steam generated by the solution will help loosen the food particles and grease inside the microwave.

Step 5: Let it sit

  • After heating, leave the microwave door closed for a few minutes to allow the steam to continue softening the grime.

Step 6: Carefully remove the bowl

  • Use oven mitts or a towel to protect your hands from the hot bowl, then take it out of the microwave.

Step 7: Wipe the interior

  • Open the microwave door and use a damp sponge, microfiber cloth, or paper towel to wipe down the interior surfaces. The softened grime should come off easily.

Step 8: Clean the turntable

  • Remove the turntable and wash it with warm, soapy water. Dry it thoroughly before placing it back in the microwave.

Step 9: Clean the exterior

  • Use a multi-surface cleaner or a solution of mild detergent and water to wipe down the exterior of the microwave, including the control panel and handle.

Step 10: Dry everything

  • Use a clean, dry cloth to wipe down all surfaces inside and outside of the microwave.

Step 10: Deodorize the microwave (Optional)

  • If there are any lingering odors, you can place a bowl of baking soda or a slice of lemon inside the microwave for a few hours to help absorb and neutralize odors.

Step 11: Regular maintenance

  • To keep your microwave clean, cover food with microwave-safe lids or paper towels to prevent splatters, and wipe up any spills or splatters as soon as they occur.

By following these steps regularly, you can keep your microwave clean and free of food residue and odors.
